2010 Meiomi Pinot Noir Belle Glos

It’s sweet!

Sweet-o-rama. This is a wildly sweet and creamy pinot. Not what I’m used to. Lotsa vanilla. Lotsa fruit. A touch of acid to help clean it all up. The tannins are soft.

I don’t quite know what to say about this one, it is like a fruit-lime-cream soda. Except, well, it’s wine, not soda. It’s a pretty big robust Pinot, like a lot of the Pinot’s I’ve had from le Cali. The label says there is some spice to this one, and I can taste it, a bit of spice to it.

It is a mix of grapes from Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Sonoma, so we got the whole gamut, SoCal to NorCal. Have no idea what that actually means, but that’s fine. I guess this gives this “balance” or something.

I guess overall, I can see the appeal of this wine, but it isn’t the goods that I really look for in a Pinot. I prefer a bit more restrained Pinot. For the price though, this is a great tasty wine with lotsa flavor.

Oak attack!!

As I try more wine, I find I can taste more and more components of various wines. I’ve been able to detect the oak in wines more and more, and then I had this wine.

I think someone dropped a vial of vanilla flavoring into this thing.

There’s plenty of red and black fruit (a little more black?). I opened this last night, and I’m drinking this after it has been out for a day. It is pretty smooth and balanced, and the tannins have mellowed out since yesterday. Not a whole lot of astringency in this tonight.

This is perfectly enjoyable, and perfectly drinkable, though I have had other California cabs that I prefer at this price point (like the Buehler cabernet).

This is better than it was last night, the fruit was a lot bigger last night, and the alcohol was a bit burnier (that’s a word, I’m sure). This is just… fine. Won’t be buying again. I’ll be trying a few others at this price point to find my twenny dolla cab.

2010 Cave de Rasteau, Rasteau, Les Peyrieres

2010 Cave de Rasteau Les Peyrieres

2010 Cave de Rasteau Les Peyrieres

Meh.

I’ll try to pick out some of the redeeming qualities of this wine.

I decanted this for an hour or so, it seems like the aroma of this wine just diminished the more it sat out. At one point it seemed like there was nearly nothing there. It has sorta come back.

There is plenty of fruit, and that is fairly smooth, even if the main fruit taste is “grape”. I taste some heat that burns out a lot of other stuff, and a decent amount of acid is kinda burning away other flavors.

This is a southern Rhone, 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre. It is a thinner, lighter style of wine, thought there is more body to this wine than I would expect from how thin this wine tastes. The heft seems to be in alcohol though, so not exactly amazing.

This is decent enough for a Sunday afternoon, though I don’t think I would buy this again. Drinkable, but not amazing.

(mostly) 2009 Bordeaux Tasting

I went to a tasting of the 2009 Bordeauxs at the local K&L Wines. At least, mostly 2009s. There were a few others in there as well.

2010 Clos Floridene, Bordeaux Blanc: Lemon and grass smells, lotsa acid to this one, the sour overcame the sweetness. Not quite to my liking.

2009 Haut Vigneau, Pessac-Leognan: Buttery aroma. Smooth and soft on the tongue, light tannins that hit the tongue late, not very fruity.

2009 Rollan de By, Medoc: Very light and earthy, this wine almost tasted like a white wine, could hardly feel the tannins. Very light plum fruit, some acidity, and a citrus finish.

2009 Ormes de Pez, St. Estephe: Very fruity nose, full of red fruit, raspberry, red plum. Taste was similar to the nose, raspberry and strawberry flavors. Soft tannins.

2009 Langoa Barton, St. Julien: Plummy, with very green flavors. Green bell pepper was suggested by the host of the event, and that seemed to fit the taste well. Plenty of fruit in this one, with soft tannins. I’d buy this to put down for a dozen years or so.

2009 Leoville Barton, St. Julien: Sweet and ripe fruit on the nose. some heat, with bolder tannins than the previous wines. I could taste the oak in this one. Noticeably long finish. Another I’ll consider buying to set away for a dozen years.

2009 Lynch Bages, Pauillac: Restrained nose, there was very little aroma. Fresh fruit taste, nice heat to it, but not in a bad way. I tasted some cherry, and some earthiness in this one. Full and solid feel. The host suggested that this wine will do very well in 10 to 20 years, and it really needs that time to bring out the real power in this wine. Another on the list.

2001 Chateau Lanessan

2001 Chateau Lanessan

2001 Chateau Lanessan, Haut Medoc: The last couple reds switched to some aged Bordeauxs to give a comparison of the kind of things that might happen in the bottle with some age. This had a grassy nose, cherry, sweet, smoother, and mellow tannins.

I ended up buying a bottle of this to have with dinner, since it was only 20 bucks. It was pretty tasty. The thing I notice most is that it just isn’t really harsh at all. It just sits there in the mouth, and allows you to taste the fruit, taste some of the oak, notice the heat and acidity, and without powering it down your throat.

It wasn’t too full of flavor after the initial sip though, all the flavor is on the initial attack, and as it sits in the mouth, not much more developed. It was tasty, but restrained, not giving too much flavor or anything.

I really enjoy the lower alcohol levels, it seems to hit differently, not as strongly, and not as intoxicatingly (that’s a word. Promise).

The more I drink these older Bordeaux wines, the more I wonder why I am wasting my time with these California Cabernets. The California stuff seems like a loud obnoxious kid compared to this stuff. I’m pretty sure I’d rather drink even this mediocre, unimpressive Bordeaux than a oakfruitheatbomb Cabernet.

2000 Domaine Chevalier, Pessac-Leognan: Sour nose, this had a cough syrup taste to it. It was sour, plenty of acidity, not too much tannins. This tasted like it was decent for what it was, but it was not to my taste. The host of the tasting said that the Pessac-Leognan wines have a certain funk to them, and it tends to be the most “love it or leave it” of all the provinces in Bordeaux. I think I’m a “leave it” type.

1997 D’Arche, Sauternes: Good Lord, this was tasty. I could have drank this all afternoon. Or rather, I would have liked to (though I would probably get a nice raging headache). This had the sweetness of a dessert wine, with a pear, lemon, and orange citrus and acidity flavor to follow up the sweetness. The sour finish offsets the sweetness. I dubbed this wine “delicious” and bought a bottle. It was a pretty decent deal at $40. The only problem is that I have no idea when I will want to open a whole bottle of this stuff. Can’t drink all that on my own, even over a couple days. Probably. This is gonna be a delicious wine to drink this summer.

2009 Justin Savant Paso Robles

Justin Savant 2009

Justin Savant 2009

The more I drink this, the more I like it!

Of course, when I first took a sip, I thought it was kinda terrible, so it is now “better than terrible”. I’m drinking it now on the second night, and these notes reflect that. Last night, when I popped this open and poured a nice lil glass, this wine was like a spastic kid that decided to throw fruit, tannins and a big dose a heat in my mouth. as much as possible, while flipping out. Not much redeeming. Like drinking from a lake of fire, except the lake is made of weird plum and blackberry juice. Ugh.

Onward to tonight. Still lotsa fruit, a ton of vanilla oak (which I can actually, and my sense of smell is horrible), the tannins aren’t numbing my tongue like they were last night. Yet. Having a nice loafa bread and chunko cheese to go with this wine tonight might help. It is nice and thick and full bodied, and that certainly counts for something. At times it almost reminds me of a thick syrupy petite syrah. I feel like there is a lot “technically” good about this, but it just isn’t floating my boat.

I kinda wish I could have this same bottle after 5 years in the cellar to see how it compares to this. It might get really good.

Or maybe not. I give it a B. Or B-. I dunno. I wouldn’t buy it again, unless it was like 15 bucks.

I bought this last time I was driving home from my folk’s house in southern California. I stopped at a couple wineries, including Justin. Man, what a nice winery! If I had a date in Paso Robles, I would totally take her here. The winery seems a lot nicer than the wine is though.

Taltarni 2003 Cephas

Taltarni 2003 Cephas

Taltarni 2003 Cephas

Strong fruity nose on this wine, fruity blast at first sip too, kinda a blackberry, raspberry taste to it. The fruit taste to it is pretty tasty!

While it’s not a thin wine, it isn’t a super thick-o-rama that I might want from a super syrah-o-rama (sorry, shiraz-o-rama. Not too hot, and the tannins kick in just a little to give that nice dry finish. Not too dry though. I’m not feeling over-powered by tannins.

The more the bottle is open, the more the fruit moves back, and the dry tannins of the syrah moves up a bit. Not bad!

Overall, it’s pretty good, though I’m gonna have to try some other Syrahs to see how this measures up. I know I’ve had some other Syrah wines that I have liked a but more.

This wine is 82% Shiraz and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Enough for me to basically call it a Syrah.

I’d be happy to drink this again, but I wan to try some other stuff before I would want to come back to this.

2009 Weinkellerei Römerhof Riesling

2009 Weinkellerei Römerhof Riesling

2009 Weinkellerei Römerhof Riesling

Another “daily drinker” sort of wine. I picked this up in Whole Foods on a whim, hoping it would be more on the dry side than the sweet side. It turns out it is somewhere in between.

I’m tasting some lemon and grapefruit flavors in this, along with some grassiness, or something like that. There is a little acidity in the end to mix with the sweetness.

This is a bit sweeter than I would like from a wine like this, I tend to like my whites a bit dryer. I’m gonna have to find some of this bone dry German Riesling next. That sounds good. And German. And that’s good.

Still, this is a decent refreshing little wine, it would probably be pretty tasty on a nice summer afternoon, out in a park somewhere for a picnic or something.

2009 Viticcio “Bere” Toscana

2009 Bere Toscana

2009 Viticcio Bere Tuscana

I picked this up because I’m looking for some decent “daily drinker” types of wine that I can buy in bulk and buy for an every day basis.

This wine seems to serve this purpose rather well! It’s not amazing, but for the price, pretty decent.

This is a Tuscan wine. I guess. I don’t really know. This winery seems make a lot of other Chianti’s and such. This is 50% Sangiovesse, 25% Cabernet, and 25% Merlot.

This tastes ripe, without being too fruity. I taste rasberry and an almost cranberry type of fruit flavor. A little burn too it, pretty thin and light, but without tasting too watered down. It’s got some tannins to it, but not too abundant. Just like the heat. It’s there, but not over abundant.

I’d be happy to drink this again for the price, I may buy a half case to keep on hand, unless I find a better wine at this price.

EDIT: I finished this bottle up on day 2, and was less impressed. It tasted thin and one dimensional, just a slightly hot, fruity wine. Nothing too compelling about it. Lowering the grade from B+ to B.
