@Alli, thanks for stopping by!

My real printmaking love is lithography, but that is hard to manage in my small home studio. Any printmaking is good printmaking though.

With regards to coloring, I *am* using the snazzy programs to help with the coloring, and it's *still* a pain in the neck. I need staff. And minions. A whole staff full of minions!

Got here via your dad's blog. He's directionless too at the moment, apparently, but is about to pursue hot dogs.

Anyhow, as relates to this post about woodcuts...I did some way back when, in college, and I was a very lazy woodcutter. I made mine more along the lines of scratchboard, where the lines are white against a black background. You can get some super-fine lines that way, and there's much less time spent cutting away all the parts you don't want to print. However, if you should decide to try this, you will definitely need a press. Unless you really enjoy working that spoon on all the areas on which you saved labor by not cutting them away!

Looked at your comic pages too, and since I don't know a dang thing about how comics are made I'm of course wondering if there isn't some snazzy program that makes all that coloring in a lot easier. Or maybe not. Maybe that's why the syndicated comic authors often have all this staff that does the dirty stuff for them.

Yes, no, I don't know?

I don't use the Japanese woodblock method, so I don't know all the ins and outs of it.

I just know the basics of how it is different from western block printing, which I much prefer.

Dear Sean,
Why do some mokuhanga artists use nori with the inks? Did the ukiyo-e masters do that? Can't the artist just use sized paper or size the paper themselves and print without the paste (nori)?

Thank you,
Lauren
